By Any Other Name
She has just moved to a small town to find a new, simple, quiet life.
Then she meets Smitty, the wealthy hard to resist rancher. He wants to know her name, but she refuses to tell him, and so the games begin.
“I work at home. Have a few horses, couple of ducks. I like ducks. Do you like ducks, Julia….? Or is it Jeanne, Jasmine, Jillian?”
I bit my lip so that I wouldn’t laugh. “I like ducks.”
“I have a little pond where they have their duck power meetings...Millie, Maude, Mary?”
I grinned and he smiled, knowing that he was making progress.
“Everyone calls me Smitty. You look like an Esmeralda to me.”
I laughed. “No.”
“Sarah?”

They meet again at an auction where she loses her bid on a beautiful horse sculpture, but Smitty wins. Grabbing the opportunity, he tells her that the winner always buys the loser a piece of pie.
In a fight to the finish, Smitty won. It was thousands beyond my bank account balance.
“Congratulations,” I told him across the aisle.
“Thank you. It sure is a beauty, Betty Lou, Bunny, Brittany…”
I had won the bid on a beautiful Asian hand-painted chest, with secret compartments and hand painted interiors. Lugging it to my car, I realized it was a mistake to pick it up and walk as if it was a light basket of laundry. Struggling, I tried to balance it on one hip and get my keys out, but I dropped them onto the gravel parking lot.
“Damnation!” I mumbled, hoping that no one had heard the new high school teacher cussing.
“Whoa there, Nancy, Nora, Nadene, let a fella help a minute, Sylvia, Stephanie.”
He took the chest as if it was filled with helium.
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome… Cindy Sue, Sally Sue, Susie Sue.”
He put it in my trunk, closed it, then leaned against my car. I was not leaving was his silent message.
