"I've never met anyone like you, Samantha Rose. You're so beautiful, and you're tough and funny, and way too smart for me. You're obsessed with measuring men's legs and pinching their toes. But I'm not joking.
"There's more than that. Something mysterious. And Lord, I can't stop thinking about you."
"It's just the wine talking."
He gave me a funny smile, part seduction, but part magnetic as if he was going to pull the essence of me out.
"Haven't had any. Go out with me," he whispered.
"Can't. You're my patient."
He nodded. "I knew that's what you'd say. But, for now, have some more wine and enjoy this beautiful sunset with me. It's almost as beautiful as the woman sitting here."
I glanced at the sky. It would be dark in less than an hour. I had to leave.
"Thanks for dinner. Tell Sarah thank you for me. It was wonderful. See you tomorrow."
"Breakfast is even better. Waffles, strawberries, whipped cream."
I headed for the front door as he continued.
"Whipped cream, my favorite."
I heard Sarah shouting from the kitchen, laughing. "Run, Sam, run. While you can, while he can't."
When I got outside, I stood and looked at the sky. I wanted this. I wanted to laugh and hear Jack flirting. I wanted good food and slow sunsets with wine.
But, most of all, I wanted Jack.
